Healthcare experts have underscored the critical role of postnatal recovery for mothers and the wellbeing of newborns, stating that proper rest, supportive bedding, and quality maternity care are non-negotiable for positive health outcomes after delivery.
A Six-Decade Legacy of Corporate Giving
This emphasis came to the fore as Vitafoam Nigeria Plc celebrated the 60th anniversary of its "First Baby" corporate social responsibility initiative at the Lagos Island Maternity Hospital (LIMH) on New Year's Day. The company's Commercial Director, Dahiru Gambo, explained that for six decades, Vitafoam has consistently honoured the first babies born each year at the hospital.
The first baby of 2026, a girl weighing 2.1kg, was delivered at 2:45 a.m. She was followed by a second delivery at 4:25 a.m., a baby boy weighing 3.2kg. Gambo detailed that the initiative recognises the first three babies born at LIMH every January 1st, with donations comprising mattresses, pillows, and other bedding items for the benefiting families and the hospital itself.
Partnerships to Strengthen Public Healthcare
Gambo stressed that the partnership is designed to motivate healthcare providers and enhance service delivery. He affirmed that private sector collaboration remains essential in fortifying Nigeria's public healthcare systems, particularly in the areas of maternal and child health.
In his remarks, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LIMH, Dr. Adeiyi Taiwo, praised Vitafoam for its unwavering, long-term commitment. He described the initiative as a noble example of corporate philanthropy that directly bolsters frontline healthcare services. Dr. Taiwo called on other organisations, especially manufacturers of maternal and childcare products, to emulate this gesture and extend support to healthcare facilities across the country.
Experts Link Bedding Quality to Health Outcomes
During the event, specialists highlighted the direct connection between quality maternity support and health results. They noted that adequate rest and supportive bedding significantly reduce maternal fatigue and accelerate recovery after childbirth. Furthermore, safe and comfortable sleeping conditions are vital for newborns, promoting healthy growth and development in the critical early stages of life.
The Apex Nurse and Head of Nursing Services at LIMH, Toyin Champion, commended Vitafoam as a dependable partner while appealing for increased support from other quarters. She reaffirmed the hospital's readiness to collaborate with any organisation dedicated to improving standards in maternal and child healthcare.
The presentation ceremony was attended by key figures including the Head of Admin/HR at LIMH, Salu Kudirat, marking a continued partnership focused on tangible support for new mothers and their infants in Lagos.
