The Kano State Government has taken decisive disciplinary action against medical personnel following a confirmed case of fatal negligence at a state-owned hospital.
Negligence Confirmed in Mother of Five's Death
Health authorities in Kano have officially stated that the death of Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, resulted from medical negligence at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in the state capital. A preliminary investigation ordered by the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, found that a pair of surgical scissors was accidentally left inside the patient's abdomen during an operation.
This grave error led to severe complications for Umar, which ultimately proved fatal. The board, through its Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, issued a statement acknowledging the mistake and expressing profound condolences to the bereaved family.
Immediate Suspensions and Further Probe
In response to the internal probe's findings, the state government has suspended three medical professionals directly involved in the surgical procedure. Their suspension from clinical duties took effect immediately.
The case has now been forwarded to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee for a more comprehensive investigation. This committee is tasked with determining additional disciplinary measures in accordance with professional medical regulations and Nigerian law.
"The Board extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late Aishatu Umar and sympathizes with them over this painful loss. We reassure the public that negligence will not be condoned in any form," the board's statement affirmed.
Family's Ordeal and Call for Accountability
The tragic incident came to light after reports from the family. The husband of the deceased, Abubakar Muhammad, recounted that his wife began experiencing intense pain and complications soon after her surgery at the hospital.
Despite repeated complaints and appeals to the hospital management for help, no timely corrective action was taken. Umar's condition deteriorated steadily until she passed away.
The Hospitals Management Board has pledged its full cooperation with all investigations to ensure total accountability for those found culpable. It also promised to strengthen oversight mechanisms across all state-run health facilities to prevent a recurrence of such a devastating incident.
This case in Kano echoes growing national concerns over medical negligence. It follows recent high-profile allegations, including legal action initiated by author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie over her son's death in a Lagos hospital, and complaints by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, regarding negligence that cost his father's life.
