AAFN Launches Tool to Combat Misinformation in Nigeria
The Action Against Fake News Network (AAFN) has launched a multifaceted advocacy toolkit to combat the spread of misinformation in Nigeria. The initiative, unveiled recently in Lagos, features a music album titled 'Malam is a Teacher' and specialized notebooks designed to promote media literacy.
Speaking at the launch, AAFN President Babatunde Ashafa emphasized that tackling fake news is essential for protecting the nation's democracy. The toolkit aims to mobilize citizens across all 774 local government areas, positioning them as ambassadors against fact distortion. 'We are organizing musical concerts on anti-fake news in each local government and plan to distribute about 10,000 copies of anti-fake news notebooks per area,' Ashafa stated.
The music album leverages creative arts to reach underserved communities, with 'Malam' serving as a metaphor for leadership and critical thinking. Ashafa noted that education is a central pillar, aiming to instill media literacy from a young age. 'By awakening children's consciousness, we build a generation capable of rejecting falsehoods,' he added.
AAFN legal adviser Princewill Akpakpan warned that unverified information can adversely affect the nation, noting that fake news carries punishable offenses such as libel, defamation, and forgery. The network plans to brand over 70 percent of Nigerians as anti-fake news ambassadors.
