The Secretary to the Anambra State Government, Mr. Oseloka Obaze, has called on the Federal Government to release money from the Ecological Fund to states affected by flood and other natural disasters. Obaze made the call during a chat with journalists in Awka on Saturday, stating that the funds would enable affected states to provide essential support to victims and repair damaged infrastructure.
State Resources Insufficient for Disaster Recovery
Obaze said the damage caused by the disasters was too severe for the states to manage alone. He emphasized that Anambra was doing its best to manage the ecological situation by relocating victims and providing relief materials, but these efforts were not enough. "The challenges are enormous; they are beyond the resources of the state," he said.
The SSG highlighted the need to construct an embankment along the banks of the River Niger to avert recurrence of flood in the state. He noted that the ecological funds of the federal government are meant for such purposes, as quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria.
Call for Federal Intervention
Obaze's remarks come amid ongoing efforts by Anambra to address ecological challenges, including erosion and flooding. The state has been seeking stronger climate partnerships to tackle these issues and build a green economy.
The release of Ecological Fund money would enable affected states to render essential support to victims and repair damaged infrastructure, which is critical for recovery and resilience. The SSG's appeal underscores the need for federal assistance in mitigating the impact of natural disasters on states.
