Arewa Forum Debunks Vehicle Tax Claim, Backs FG Reforms

The Arewa Socio-Economic Forum (ASEF) has categorically debunked viral claims circulating on social media that the federal government introduced a new vehicle tax, labeling the reports as entirely false and misleading.

In a statement released on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, the forum’s national president, Dr. Aminu Kuta, confirmed that independent investigations revealed no such policy had been implemented by the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) or the Federal Ministry of Finance.

Forum Warns Against Misinformation

ASEF emphasized that the clarification was necessary to prevent panic among Nigerians, as fake websites and fabricated messages are increasingly being used to deceive citizens on tax matters. The group urged the public to disregard such misleading content and always verify tax-related information through official platforms.

“Misinformation of this nature not only creates unnecessary anxiety but also undermines public trust in government institutions,” Kuta said.

Support for Tax Reforms

Beyond addressing the false claim, ASEF expressed support for the federal government’s broader fiscal reforms, noting that recent changes are beginning to yield positive results. Kuta highlighted that states with weaker economies are seeing improved financial capacity due to increased Value Added Tax (VAT) allocations and more equitable distribution.

“The ongoing tax reforms are showing positive outcomes, including increased VAT inflows to states and better support for less economically advantaged regions,” he stated.

Commendation for Officials

The forum commended Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele for his reform-focused fiscal agenda aimed at improving transparency and efficiency. It also praised NRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji for strengthening tax administration and enhancing communication around revenue policies.

“We salute their commitment to building a tax system that works for the country, helping to restore confidence and improve revenue outcomes,” the statement added.

Call for Accountability

ASEF called on Nigerians to remain engaged and hold public institutions accountable, stressing that reforms require patience, transparency, and public cooperation. “Credible information and responsible civic participation are key to building public trust and supporting Nigeria’s economic stability,” Kuta concluded.

The NRS had earlier dismissed the viral vehicle tax reports, confirming that no such policy exists and urging the public to rely only on official communications.
