Court Forfeits 48 Properties Linked to Ex-Minister Abubakar Malami

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the immediate and final forfeiture of 48 properties linked to Abubakar Malami, the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice under former President Muhammadu Buhari. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik delivered the judgment on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, ruling on an application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Court Rules Properties Not Lawfully Acquired

The court held that Malami and other individuals claiming ownership of the properties failed to prove that the assets were acquired lawfully. Consequently, the judge ordered the final forfeiture of all 48 properties to the federal government. The EFCC had sought the forfeiture as part of its ongoing anti-corruption investigations.

Background of the Case

The properties, located in various parts of Nigeria, were allegedly acquired through proceeds of unlawful activities during Malami's tenure as Attorney General. The EFCC presented evidence linking the assets to the former minister, prompting the court to issue an interim forfeiture order earlier. Malami and other claimants were given the opportunity to show cause why the properties should not be permanently forfeited, but the court found their explanations insufficient.
