Female Religious Leader Apprehended by Anti-Graft Agency
Operatives from the Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have taken into custody a female Archbishop for allegedly violating Nigeria's currency laws.
The arrest occurred on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, targeting Archbishop Angel Oyeghe, who leads Faith Healing Ministry in Warri, Delta State.
Viral Video Triggers Investigation
According to an official statement from the commission, the arrest followed the circulation of a viral video that showed several individuals under the Archbishop's supervision engaging in naira mutilation during a church program.
The controversial footage captured participants spraying naira notes on a live cow as part of the religious ceremony, an act that directly contravenes Nigerian financial regulations.
Multiple Charges and Ongoing Investigation
Archbishop Oyeghe now faces charges of conspiracy, naira mutilation, and suspected money laundering. The EFCC has confirmed that the suspect has provided useful statements to investigators.
The commission emphasized that this action violates Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, which strictly prohibits the abuse of the national currency.
EFCC officials also revealed they are pursuing other suspects involved in the incident, indicating the investigation remains active. The Archbishop will be formally charged in court once the EFCC completes its investigative process.
