The Federal Government has issued a strong rebuttal against allegations of a covert operation designed to target and weaken opposition politicians through unlawful arrests and prosecutions.
Viral Document Sparks Controversy
In recent days, a document circulated widely on social media platforms, causing significant public concern. The document alleged the existence of a clandestine multi-agency task force, codenamed "ADP4VIP" (Arrest, Detain, Prosecute for Very Important Persons).
According to the claims, this operation was being coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) and involved key anti-corruption bodies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).
The alleged objective of this purported task force was the systematic weakening of opposition activity, specifically within parties like the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in the run-up to the 2027 general elections.
Government's Firm Rejection
In a press release issued on Tuesday, 30 December 2025, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, categorically denied all allegations. The government described the viral document as a complete fabrication and an act of deliberate disinformation.
"The Federal Government of Nigeria categorically states that it harbours no plans to unlawfully arrest, detain, or prosecute opposition figures," the statement read. It further clarified that the so-called 'ADP4VIP' programme was non-existent.
The government accused opposition elements of creating a "dangerous red herring" to frame lawful anti-corruption activities as political targeting. The aim, according to the statement, is to shield certain individuals from being held accountable by national laws and agencies.
Reaffirming Commitment to Democracy
Reiterating its position, the Tinubu administration emphasized its focus on pressing national issues. The government stated its priorities remain economic reforms, tackling insecurity, expanding trade, and restoring investor confidence.
The statement also invoked Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which guarantees the right to free association and assembly. It underscored President Bola Tinubu's oath to uphold democratic principles and the rule of law.
"The Federal Government remains unwavering in its commitment to the rule of law, due process, and the independence of institutions," the release firmly stated.
A stern warning was issued about the likely increase in fake news and disinformation as the 2027 elections approach. Citizens were urged to remain vigilant and reject what the government termed "the politics of distortion and division."
