The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has initiated an investigation into its relationship with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, following the release of court documents that exposed Bill Gates' association with the convicted sex offender.
Background of the Investigation
The probe was announced after a tranche of documents from the U.S. Department of Justice revealed emails and photographs showing Gates and Epstein together. Some files also indicated communication between Epstein and Gates Foundation staff.
In a statement, the foundation said: 'In March, with the support of our Chair, Bill Gates, and our independent Governing Board members, Gates Foundation CEO Mark Suzman commissioned an external review to assess past foundation engagement with Epstein, and our current policies for vetting and developing new philanthropic partnerships. That review is underway, and we expect the board and management will receive an update this summer.'
Internal Memo and Board Meeting
CEO Mark Suzman sent a memo to staff on Tuesday addressing the review and recent layoffs. He wrote: 'This is a challenging time for our organization in many ways, but it also highlights the critical importance of taking the tough actions now.'
Suzman also noted that a recent board meeting in London included a session on the impact of the Justice Department's Epstein files and their relevance to the foundation's work and reputation.
Gates' Response
Bill Gates has previously stated that his relationship with Epstein was limited to philanthropy-related discussions and that meeting him was a mistake. Gates is scheduled to testify about his Epstein ties before Congress in June.
