The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has launched a scathing critique against the Federal Government, accusing it of turning a blind eye to what they describe as systematic genocide against Christians in the country.
In a strongly worded statement, the prominent rights organization expressed deep concern over the escalating violence targeting Christian communities across Nigeria. The group highlighted numerous incidents of attacks on worship centers and Christian settlements that have resulted in significant casualties.
Trump's Intervention Applauded
HURIWA particularly commended former US President Donald Trump for his recent comments acknowledging the persecution faced by Nigerian Christians. The organization noted that international recognition of this crisis stands in stark contrast to the Nigerian government's apparent indifference.
The rights group emphasized: "While world leaders are beginning to acknowledge this humanitarian catastrophe, our own government maintains a disturbing silence that effectively enables these atrocities to continue unchecked."
Pattern of Violence Documented
According to HURIWA's documentation, several northern states have witnessed coordinated attacks targeting Christian populations. The organization detailed instances where:
- Churches have been burned during worship services
- Christian communities face repeated violent invasions
- Religious leaders have been specifically targeted
- Entire villages have been displaced due to religious violence
Call for Government Action
The human rights advocates issued a passionate appeal to Nigerian authorities, demanding immediate and concrete measures to protect religious minorities. They stressed that the constitutional guarantee of religious freedom must be upheld through decisive action rather than empty rhetoric.
"The right to practice one's faith without fear of violence is fundamental to any democratic society," HURIWA asserted. "Our government's failure to protect this right represents a catastrophic failure of leadership and basic governance."
The organization concluded by urging international bodies and religious freedom advocates worldwide to maintain pressure on the Nigerian government until meaningful protection is provided for all religious communities.
