The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has stated that the detention and prosecution of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, are strictly guided by the law and not influenced by politics. This response comes after the El-Rufai Support Group Association hired a Washington DC-based international advocacy firm, Vanguard Africa, to protest the prosecution.
ICPC Spokesperson Denies Political Motives
John Odey, the ICPC spokesman, emphasized that the anti-corruption agency operates within the confines of the law and remains unmoved by the support group's decision to seek international support. Odey stated, "We are not moved. We operate within the confines of the law. The ICPC is not moved at all." He further clarified that El-Rufai is in custody based on a court remand order, not arbitrary detention.
Odey also dismissed allegations that the Commission is being used for political purposes, asserting, "No, we are not political. The ICPC is not political. It has never been and never will be. The ICPC is an anti-corruption law enforcement agency. We have an Act that guides our operations."
El-Rufai Support Group Hires US Lobbyists
The El-Rufai Support Group Association announced that Vanguard Africa will conduct outreach to US Congress members, federal agencies, and multilateral organizations over the case. The group's campaign alleges the erosion of the rule of law and abuse of due process in Nigeria. However, the ICPC maintains that its actions are lawful and transparent.
Allegations of Denied Medical Access
Previously, El-Rufai's son, Mohammed Bello, alleged that the ICPC denied his father medical access while in custody. The family claims that court orders were disregarded during detention and demands respect for human rights and immediate compliance with legal directives.
El-Rufai Remains in ICPC Custody
El-Rufai will remain in ICPC custody until June 2026, facing nine charges related to alleged fraud and abuse of office. The defence counsel claims the detention is politically motivated amid ongoing bail hearings.
