The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has stated that the disposal of assets recovered from criminal activities is a vital component of Nigeria’s broader strategy to combat corruption and organized crime.
ICPC Emphasizes Importance of Asset Disposal
According to the commission, beyond prosecution, ensuring that illicitly acquired property is sold or properly managed helps to diminish the financial incentives that drive criminal behavior.
The statement was made in Abuja during an assessment of a public auction of forfeited assets organized by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The Acting Director of the ICPC’s Proceeds of Crime and Management Directorate, Mr. George Lawal, described the process as transparent and in line with the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act, which governs the handling of recovered assets.
Transparency in Asset Management
Lawal noted that the open bidding process, where stakeholders witnessed the opening of sealed bids, reflects a growing commitment to accountability in the management of recovered assets. He emphasized that such transparency is essential to ensure that proceeds of crime are not only recovered but also returned to public use in a way that benefits society.
He further stressed that depriving criminals of the financial rewards of their actions serves as a strong deterrent and reinforces the rule of law.
Strengthening Public Confidence
Lawal added that sustained enforcement of asset recovery laws, combined with transparent disposal systems, will continue to play a significant role in reducing crime and strengthening public confidence in government institutions.
