The Lagos State Government on Sunday announced the launch of a statewide emergency public awareness campaign named "Operation Lagos BioShield" to enhance surveillance and prevent the potential importation of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) into the state. This initiative comes in response to fresh outbreaks in parts of East and Central Africa.
No Confirmed Cases in Lagos
State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, reassured residents that there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola in Lagos or anywhere in Nigeria. He emphasized that the campaign is a preventive measure, not a reaction to a crisis. "This campaign is not a response to a crisis. It is a proactive measure to strengthen public awareness, preparedness and prevention," Abayomi stated.
Reason for Renewed Alert
The renewed alert follows outbreaks of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. This strain lacks a widely available licensed vaccine or specific antiviral treatment. Abayomi warned that prevention, early detection, and rapid isolation are the most effective defenses against the disease. "Prevention, early detection, rapid isolation and supportive medical care remain our most effective tools," he added.
Public Understanding Key
The commissioner stressed that public understanding of the disease is crucial to curbing panic, misinformation, and stigma. He explained that Ebola is not spread through casual contact but through direct contact with blood, bodily fluids, or contaminated materials of an infected person who is already symptomatic.
The campaign aims to keep Lagos ahead of any potential threat through heightened awareness and preparedness.
