A Nigerian lawyer has spoken out to advise citizens on how to handle loan apps that resort to harassment and threats when demanding repayment. The lawyer highlighted three key strategies that borrowers can employ to protect themselves from such aggressive tactics.
Understanding Your Rights Against Loan Apps
The lawyer emphasized that many Nigerians are unaware of their legal rights when dealing with loan apps. She pointed out that these apps often operate outside the law by using intimidation and public shaming to force repayment. Borrowers should know that such practices are illegal and can be reported.
Three Ways to Handle Loan App Harassment
First, the lawyer advised borrowers to document all instances of harassment, including screenshots of messages and recordings of calls. This evidence can be used to file complaints with regulatory authorities. Second, she recommended contacting the app's customer service to formally request that they cease harassment and adhere to the terms of the loan agreement. Third, if the harassment persists, borrowers should report the app to the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) or other relevant bodies.
Many Nigerians who came across the lawyer's advice shared their own experiences and expressed support for her stance. They noted that loan apps often exploit borrowers' fear of public exposure, but with the right knowledge, people can fight back.
