The Embassy of Liberia has officially released the list of 12 African countries whose citizens are eligible for visa-free entry into the Republic of Liberia starting in 2026. This policy grants citizens of these countries the right to travel to Liberia without applying for a visa or paying any visa fee.
Eligible Countries Under ECOWAS Free Movement
According to the Liberian embassy, the visa-free privilege is extended exclusively to member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The eligible countries are: Benin, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia (citizens of Liberia itself are not subject to visa requirements for entry), Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo. This policy aligns with the ECOWAS protocol on free movement of persons, residence, and establishment.
Visa Requirements for Other Travellers
The Liberian embassy also clarified that citizens of African countries not on this list, as well as travellers from outside the continent, must apply for a visa before travelling. The embassy warned that visa applications from ineligible countries may be rejected, and it has published the list of required documents on its official website. The full details are available on the Liberian government's official portal.
Regional Context: Similar Policies in Sierra Leone
In a related development, the Republic of Sierra Leone earlier published its own list of 12 African countries eligible for visa-free entry in 2026, also under the ECOWAS free movement policy. This reflects a broader trend among West African nations to facilitate regional integration and travel.
