A claim circulating on social media that Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, has secured the presidential ticket of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) with 22 million votes ahead of the 2027 general elections has been debunked. Fact-checking reveals no evidence or credible report supports this assertion.
The claim originated from an X user identified as 'Mayor of Calabar,' who posted: 'Peter Obi has clinched the NDC ticket with a total of 22 million votes. APC, ntoor. Tinubu had only 10.9 million votes.' However, as of the time of this report, the NDC has not conducted its presidential primary. The party's primary election is scheduled for Friday, May 29, 2026, according to The Cable. Therefore, the post is misleading and false.
Background of the Claim
The false claim emerged five days after the NDC screened Peter Obi as part of the party's pre-primary process. Obi had announced the screening on his social media platforms, prompting reactions from supporters and critics alike. Some supporters congratulated him, while others expressed doubts about his chances.
Reactions from Nigerians
Femi Obaf wrote: 'The vision is distinctive, clear, authentic, original and unambiguous. A New Nigeria will be possible in our lifetime. Congratulations PO. Let us roll out the biggest campaign ever to convince those not yet on our side. We will prove them wrong like Arsenal.'
Ayemojubar predicted a vigorous campaign: 'Peter Obi go see parallel campaigns, he go shock am. As you dey do your campaign for Kano, we dey do our own too for 36 states of the country, both on ground and virtually.'
Osas questioned Obi's performance as governor: 'Did they review your performance as Governor? Strongly doubt they will give you the ticket if they objectively rated your abysmal performance as Governor.'
Saint Isaiah offered congratulations: 'Congratulations, Nigerians, congratulations, Okwute. The big task commences now. We're taking back our country from evil, wicked and senseless leaders. Sending them to hell where they came from.'
Obi's Stance on 2027
In related news, Legit.ng reported that Peter Obi has stated Nigeria needs a manager and wealth creator like himself. He claimed that no other presidential aspirant, including President Bola Tinubu and Rabiu Kwankwaso, can match his record in wealth creation. This statement was in response to Kwankwaso's earlier assertion at Chatham House that he holds a PhD and is more qualified to be president.
As the 2027 elections approach, political activities are intensifying, but fact-checking remains crucial to avoid the spread of misinformation. The NDC primary on May 29 will determine the party's candidate, and until then, claims of Obi securing the ticket are unfounded.
