Peter Obi Attributes Nigeria's Poverty to Honoring Corrupt Leaders with Titles

Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has declared that Nigeria's enduring poverty is not a consequence of insufficient resources but rather stems from the deliberate choices made by both leaders and citizens. He delivered this pointed critique during a meeting in Abuja with representatives from the Association of Skilled and Vocational Artisans of Nigeria (ASVAN).

A Nation Rich in Resources Yet Mired in Hardship

Obi emphasized that a country abundantly blessed with oil, gas reserves, and a vast, energetic youth population should not be grappling with the severe economic hardships currently witnessed nationwide. He argued that the core issue is fundamentally rooted in defective leadership and a societal system that, alarmingly, glorifies corrupt practices instead of decisively combating them.

"We are poor because we have chosen to be poor. We give titles and front-row seats of honour to those who steal public funds, and yet we expect to grow," Obi stated unequivocally. This practice, he suggested, perpetuates a cycle of poverty by rewarding malfeasance rather than integrity and public service.

Contrast with Indonesia's Progress

To illustrate his point, Obi drew a stark comparison with Indonesia, a nation with comparable size and demographic profile. He noted that Indonesia has achieved more robust economic advancement, attributing this success to more focused, purposeful leadership and clearer, well-defined national priorities.

Recalling a past discussion with an Indonesian leader, Obi shared the advice he received: the essential pillars for national progress are aggressively tackling corruption, making substantial investments in education and healthcare systems, and empowering citizens to become productive economic contributors.

The Path Forward: Prioritizing People and SMEs

Obi stressed that nations which attain sustainable development consistently prioritize the welfare of their people and the growth of small businesses. He explained that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) thrive when governments establish stable, transparent, and predictable systems that foster entrepreneurship rather than hinder it.

Issuing a direct call to action, Obi urged Nigerians: "Join the fight for a great Nigeria. Stop worshipping those who steal your money, stop giving them titles, and stand up for what is right. Vote, defend your votes, and help produce good leaders at all levels, from councillor to president, and you will see the country change."

ASVAN's Support for Obi's Vision

Earlier in the meeting, ASVAN's National President, Comrade Obijuru Everest, expressed the association's solidarity. He stated that ASVAN has been closely monitoring Obi's political trajectory and believes it is crucial to support his aspirations and vision for comprehensive national development and systemic reform.
