The House of Representatives has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu to produce Adeyemi Adeniyi, the man accused of posing as the director-general of a controversial government agency. Lawmakers are intensifying their probe into the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), which they allege operated without legal backing.
Lawmakers Issue 48-Hour Ultimatum
Committee chairman Yusuf Gagdi, quoted by The Punch, declared that Adeniyi must appear before the panel because the allegations involve major government institutions. “This committee clearly needs the suspected DG to appear before this committee. People’s names are involved. Institutional integrity is involved,” Gagdi said on Monday, July 27. He ruled that the Inspector-General of Police must present Adeniyi by Wednesday at 12 noon.
Investigation Uncovers 29 Forged Documents
The committee revealed that its probe has uncovered 29 documents suspected to have been forged. These documents allegedly include approvals attributed to the Presidency, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Office of the Head of the Civil Service, and the Ministry of Finance. A police officer who testified before lawmakers stated that signatures on the disputed documents did not match authentic government records. “They are not the same,” the officer said.
Police Confirm Criminal Charges
Police also confirmed that Adeniyi has been arrested and arraigned before the Federal High Court on an eight-count charge involving conspiracy and fraud. The officer declined further comments because the matter is sub judice. Investigators told lawmakers that the case followed petitions from the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President. The petitions accused Adeniyi of falsely claiming to head both the PFIPC and the Presidential Economic Advisory Council. They alleged he used these positions to secure office accommodation at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja, sought approval to recruit about 300 workers, pursued a ₦1.32 billion budget allocation in the 2026 Appropriation Act, and planned a World Investment Summit.
Budget Office Clarifies Agency's Origin
Earlier, the Budget Office told the House that the PFIPC's roots trace back to a council created under former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019. It stated that official approvals from other government agencies led to its inclusion in the 2026 budget. Adeniyi had previously claimed he had no role in the budget entry after his unsuccessful attempt to secure its inclusion.
