Crowd Gathers at Abuja Court to Demand Release of Activist Sowore

Supporters of Omoyele Sowore, the activist and former presidential candidate, gathered outside the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, chanting 'Free Sowore' as court officials barricaded the gate. Videos circulating on social media captured the scene, showing the crowd demanding his release while security personnel kept the entrance shut.

Sowore Faces Charges of Criminal Defamation Against President Tinubu

Sowore is being prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS) for alleged criminal defamation. The charges stem from posts on his official X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts in which he referred to President Bola Tinubu as a 'criminal.' The DSS claims these statements constitute defamation under Nigerian law.

Court Remands Sowore in Kuje Prison Until Bail Hearing

On Monday, June 21, Sowore was initially remanded in Kuje prison. He appeared in court again on June 24, where the judge ordered him to be returned to Kuje prison until June 30, when his bail application will be heard. The court has not yet ruled on the bail request, and Sowore remains in custody pending the hearing.

Supporters Vow to Continue Protests

The demonstration outside the court reflects ongoing tensions between the government and activists. Sowore, a known critic of the administration, has faced multiple legal battles in the past. His supporters have vowed to continue their protests until he is freed, calling the charges politically motivated. According to a statement from his legal team, they are confident the bail application will be granted, but the DSS has opposed bail, citing the severity of the allegations.
