Tinubu: Interfaith dialogue only solution to insecurity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that interfaith dialogue is the only viable solution to Nigeria's persistent security challenges. Speaking on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at his residence in Abuja, Tinubu received Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the secretary for relations with States and International Organisations of the Holy See, and emphasised the critical role of religious harmony in national stability.

President reaffirms commitment to religious tolerance

According to a statement by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu reiterated his administration's dedication to prioritising interfaith dialogue and fostering peace, harmony, and tolerance among Nigeria's diverse religious communities. The president highlighted his longstanding cordial relationship with the Catholic Church, particularly during his tenure as governor of Lagos State, and expressed strong support for the Church's contributions to education and healthcare.

Tinubu noted that his belief in the Church's role led him to prioritise returning mission schools to religious institutions immediately after becoming governor, reversing the takeover by previous military administrations.

Tinubu praises Pope Leo XIV

During the meeting, Tinubu lauded Pope Leo XIV, stating: "I appreciate the Pope. It was an honour for me to lead the Nigerian delegation to his inauguration as Pope Leo XIV. It was a moment of history. I see his efforts all over the world to promote World Peace. We need his spiritual engagement, as millions around the world look up to him. I look forward to receiving him in Nigeria."

The president further urged religious leaders to continue preaching peace and tolerance, saying: "My administration will continue to work on religious harmony among all faiths. Our Bishops and religious leaders have been doing a great deal. Please tell them to continue the good work they are doing. Let them continue to preach peace and tolerance. We cannot have an excess of that."

Role of Catholic Church in Nigeria

Tinubu acknowledged the Catholic Church's significant contributions to Nigeria's development, particularly in education, health, and humanitarian efforts. "I understand the roles that the Catholic church has been playing in expanding the frontiers of education, health and humanitarianism in Nigeria. It means a lot to us in Nigeria, and the country is benefiting from it," he said.

The president also highlighted his administration's efforts to guarantee freedom of worship, noting: "As you may be aware, my wife is a pastor at an evangelical church. This downplays the religious connotation that the religious controversy in our country might have taken."

Broader context and condolences

Earlier, Tinubu mourned the passing of Madam Lucia Onabanjo, wife of Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, the first civilian governor of Ogun State. He described her unwavering support for her husband during his tenure as "commendable" and praised her interest in children's welfare and women's empowerment. He prayed for the repose of her soul and strength for her family.

The president's remarks come amid ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, including banditry, kidnapping, and insurgency. Tinubu's emphasis on interfaith dialogue as the only path to addressing these issues underscores his administration's focus on soft power approaches alongside security operations.
