World at Risk if Internet Fails, Warns ITU

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has issued a stark warning that the world's population faces significant risks if the Internet were to fail. In a world where six billion people—74 percent of humanity—depend on the Internet, a sudden outage would have cascading effects on every aspect of modern life.

Potential Threats to Internet Infrastructure

The ITU highlighted that extreme heat can knock out power grids, earthquakes can sever submarine cables, and solar storms can disable satellites. These disruptions, even if initially quiet, could quickly escalate into a full-blown crisis affecting families, businesses, and communities worldwide.

Call for Urgent Action

A new study conducted by the ITU, the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, and Sciences Po calls for urgent measures to protect the digital lifelines that people rely on. It urges governments, industry leaders, and civil society to collaborate in mapping vulnerabilities and strengthening resilience.

“Connectivity is no longer a luxury—it is a lifeline,” said Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the ITU. “We must act now to ensure the Internet remains accessible, resilient, and ready for the challenges ahead.”

Upcoming Global Gatherings in Geneva

Next month, Geneva will host three major global gatherings focused on the future of digital cooperation. The AI for Good Global Summit, scheduled for July 7–10 at Palexpo, will showcase how artificial intelligence can improve lives. The UN’s inaugural Global Dialogue on AI Governance, taking place July 6–7, will convene leaders to shape responsible AI frameworks. Additionally, the yearly WSIS Forum will advance global digital cooperation, continuing the legacy of the World Summit on the Information Society launched in Geneva in 2003.
