Fresh Leadership Tussle Rocks ADC in Kano as Support Group Petitions Police
A fresh leadership crisis has erupted within the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kano State, with a support group petitioning the police authority over an impending parallel congress. The group raised alarm about a planned parallel leadership election that could potentially trigger significant security challenges in the state.
Petition Details and Security Concerns
In a petition filed by the ADC Support Group, supporters expressed deep concern over what they described as a clandestine effort to conduct a separate leadership poll under the guise of representing the party. The letter, addressed to the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, calls for urgent intervention to halt the exercise, scheduled for April 20, 2026, along Murtala Muhammad Way in Kano.
The group, led by its chairman, Hon. Muhammad Yusuf Babba Dan Agundi, alleged that unidentified individuals are orchestrating this parallel event, which they fear could pose a serious threat to peace and order. According to the petition, the group became aware of the planned meeting through a report aired on a local radio station, heightening concerns over the legitimacy and intent of the organisers.
Background of the ADC Leadership Structure
This crisis emerges against the backdrop of the ADC's recent consensus arrangement, which produced a 34-member state executive committee to pilot the party's affairs. The arrangement reportedly involved key political figures, including former Vice President Alh. Atiku Abubakar, Leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and former deputy governor Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, who were said to have agreed on a sharing formula of 40%, 30%, and 30% respectively.
However, the support group warns that allowing the parallel gathering to proceed without proper verification could lead to confusion among party members and potentially spark unrest. They emphasized that proactive action by security agencies is necessary to safeguard lives and property, as well as prevent any breakdown of law and order in Kano.
Call for Police Intervention
The group has urged the police to immediately intervene by stopping the planned meeting and launching an investigation to identify those behind it. They argue that such measures are crucial to maintaining stability and ensuring that the party's internal processes are not hijacked by unauthorized elements.
This development highlights ongoing tensions within the ADC as it navigates leadership dynamics in Kano, with potential implications for the broader political landscape in the state.
