Civil Society Groups Rally Behind INEC Chairman, Denounce Political Smear Campaign
A coalition of civil society organizations has voiced robust support for the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, strongly condemning what it describes as a sustained campaign of calumny against him by elements within the political class. The groups warned that such actions pose a significant threat to Nigeria's democratic stability, emphasizing the need to protect public trust in electoral institutions.
Press Conference Highlights Concerns
Speaking at a world press conference, the Humanities Welfare and Social Development Initiatives, in collaboration with other civil society stakeholders across Nigeria, addressed the issue. The conference was led by Comrade Felix Nnalue Attah, National Convener of the Humanities Welfare and Social Development Initiatives, alongside representatives from various organizations including the Coalition of Civil Society Partners, Comrade Kennedy Tabuko of the Niger Delta Democratic Initiatives, Usman Baba Kankia, President of the Arewa Youth Parliament, Ambassador Akinnawo Oluwaseun of the Initiative for African Youth Advancement Advocacy and Empowerment, and Comrade Shuaibu Abdulkadir of the Nigeria Youth Advocacy for Good Governance Initiative (NYAGGI).
The coalition expressed deep concern over deliberate attempts to tarnish the image of the INEC chairman, stressing that misinformation and politically motivated attacks could erode public confidence in democratic institutions. In response, the group passed a vote of confidence in Amupitan's leadership, commending him for implementing reforms and administrative measures aimed at strengthening electoral integrity, transparency, and accountability.
Commitment to Rule of Law and Professional Background
The coalition highlighted Amupitan's adherence to the rule of law, particularly noting his compliance with court rulings on sensitive political matters such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) crisis. This, they argued, demonstrates a steadfast commitment to constitutional governance and fair electoral processes.
Emphasizing his professional credentials, the groups described Amupitan as a seasoned legal scholar and administrator. They cited his previous roles as former Head of the Department of Public Law, Dean of the Faculty of Law, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Jos, as well as his esteemed status as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. These qualifications, they asserted, underscore his capability to lead INEC effectively.
Call to Action and Future Outlook
The coalition urged Nigerians to remain supportive of institutional reforms and resist distractions from political actors who seek to undermine progress through unfounded allegations and blackmail. "At this critical moment in our democratic journey, it is imperative to prioritise national interest, uphold truth, and support credible leadership committed to fairness, justice, and electoral excellence," the group stated.
Additionally, the organizations called on the INEC chairman to remain focused and undeterred, encouraging him to continue upholding the rule of law in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. They emphasized that maintaining integrity and transparency in electoral processes is essential for Nigeria's democratic health and stability.
