The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Olanipekun Olukoyede, has called for credible elections in 2027 to strengthen Nigeria's democracy. He made the call on Tuesday in Abuja during a two-day workshop for civil society organizations on election integrity.
EFCC's Role in Electoral Integrity
Olukoyede emphasized that the EFCC is committed to ensuring that the 2027 general elections are free, fair, and credible. He noted that the commission would work closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other security agencies to prevent electoral fraud and corruption.
He stated that the EFCC would deploy its resources to monitor campaign finances, investigate allegations of vote buying, and prosecute offenders. The chairman urged civil society organizations to partner with the EFCC in educating the public on the dangers of electoral malpractice.
Challenges and Solutions
Olukoyede acknowledged the challenges facing the electoral process, including voter apathy, political thuggery, and the influence of money in politics. He called for collective efforts to address these issues and ensure that the will of the people prevails.
He also highlighted the need for legal reforms to strengthen the anti-corruption framework and enhance the capacity of law enforcement agencies to combat electoral crimes. The EFCC boss assured that the commission would remain impartial and professional in its operations.
Call for Civil Society Support
The EFCC chairman urged civil society organizations to play a proactive role in monitoring elections and reporting irregularities. He emphasized that their involvement is crucial in building public confidence in the electoral process.
The workshop, organized by the EFCC in collaboration with the Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room, aimed to develop strategies for ensuring electoral integrity. Participants included representatives from various civil society groups, media organizations, and international partners.
In his remarks, the Executive Director of the Situation Room, Dr. Clement Nwankwo, commended the EFCC for its efforts and called for sustained collaboration to achieve credible elections in 2027.
