A grassroots support group known as KOHmmunity has initiated a widespread mobilization effort to actualize the governorship ambition of Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, ahead of the 2027 elections. The group, which spans the entire metropolis from the tech hubs of Yaba and university communities in Akoka to major commercial centers like Alaba and Lagos Island, is championing a citizen-driven approach to political engagement.
Organic Growth and Decentralized Structure
In a statement released by one of its conveners, Dr. Lanre Ajibade, KOHmmunity emphasized that it operates independently of conventional campaign structures. The group has already registered over 5,000 residents on its platform, describing the initiative as an organic, bottom-up movement that unites professionals, artisans, students, and community leaders.
Ajibade highlighted that the group has experienced rapid expansion in recent weeks, with decentralized cells emerging across various wards and digital platforms. He noted that traders, students, and young professionals are actively driving advocacy within their respective spheres through market interactions, campus engagements, and online conversations.
The mobilization is rooted in concerns about Lagos's development trajectory and the perceived need for experienced leadership to sustain ongoing reforms. According to Ajibade, this grassroots effort reflects a growing desire among residents to influence political outcomes directly.
Shift in Civic Participation
Mrs. Folashade Ajayi, a member of KOHmmunity who coordinates a cell in Idumota, underscored that the initiative represents a significant shift in civic participation among Lagos residents. "We are not waiting for politicians to seek our votes. We are organizing because government policies directly affect our businesses and livelihoods," she stated.
Ajayi added that while formal election campaigns have yet to commence, grassroots movements like KOHmmunity are already shaping early political narratives ahead of the 2027 election cycle. This proactive stance indicates a broader trend of increased citizen involvement in the political process.
Hamzat's Political Profile and Party Dynamics
Meanwhile, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat is emerging as a strong contender for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket in Lagos. His profile is bolstered by his current role in Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's administration and his extensive involvement in Lagos governance over the years.
Having previously served as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure before assuming the deputy governor position in 2019, Hamzat is widely regarded as a key figure in policy execution and infrastructure development. Party sources indicate that the Lagos APC has historically favored continuity, often elevating candidates already embedded within the system—a factor that could significantly benefit Hamzat.
His loyalty to the party structure is viewed as a major asset, particularly his decision to step down his governorship ambition in 2018 to support Sanwo-Olu, a move that reinforced party cohesion. Additionally, Hamzat's low-profile political style and broad acceptability across party blocs may position him as a consensus candidate amid competing interests.

However, the race remains open, with other prominent figures such as Femi Gbajabiamila, Tokunbo Abiru, and former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode also being mentioned as potential aspirants. He is also reported to enjoy the backing of some members of the Governor's Advisory Council (GAC), led by Tajudeen Olusi, which could further strengthen his candidacy.
