Imo Political Leader Declares Support for Tinubu's Electoral Reforms
Southeast political stakeholder and businessman Dumebi Ifeanyichukwu has publicly declared his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding the proposed amendments to Nigeria's Electoral Act. Speaking during a media interaction on Thursday, February 19, Ifeanyichukwu emphasized that residents and political actors in Imo State stand firmly behind the president's approach to electoral reform.
Strengthening Nigeria's Democratic Framework
Ifeanyichukwu described the reform efforts as a necessary step toward strengthening Nigeria's democratic framework ahead of future elections. He stated that the ongoing conversation around the Electoral Act should not be reduced to mere politics but should focus on building a stronger and more credible democratic system for the nation.
"We want the President to know that Imo people are fully behind him," Ifeanyichukwu declared. "What matters is building a stronger and more credible democratic system that restores public confidence in our electoral processes."
Addressing National Debate on Electoral Changes
The comments come amid heightened national debate over proposed changes to the Electoral Act. While supporters argue that adjustments are needed to address operational gaps identified during previous election cycles, critics have raised concerns about transparency and potential political implications of the amendments.
Ifeanyichukwu urged lawmakers at the National Assembly to ensure that any amendment to the Electoral Act prioritizes national stability, inclusiveness, and fairness. He emphasized that constructive dialogue rather than division should guide the reform process.
Response to Cubana ChiefPriest's Political Commentary
The Imo politician also referenced the position taken by nightlife entrepreneur and social commentator Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana ChiefPriest, who recently weighed in on political discussions surrounding electoral reforms. Ifeanyichukwu noted that the involvement of young influencers in governance conversations reflects growing civic engagement among Nigerians.
"Voices like ChiefPriest's show that Nigerians, especially young people, are becoming more interested in policies that shape the country's future," he observed. "We should encourage this constructive dialogue as it contributes to our democratic development."
Tinubu's Commitment to Electoral Improvement
Ifeanyichukwu expressed confidence in President Tinubu's commitment to improving Nigeria's electoral system, recalling recent protests calling for electronic transmission of results that have since been addressed through legislative action.
"The President's ultimate goal is to improve the electoral system in Nigeria, and he is on the right track," Ifeanyichukwu stated. "President Tinubu is a leader that listens and has the best interest of all Nigerians at heart."
Recent Legislative Developments
President Tinubu recently signed the final amendments of the 2022 Electoral Act Bill into law at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday, February 18. During the signing ceremony, the president praised the National Assembly for passing the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill and emphasized that democracy thrives on strong discussions aimed at national development and stability.
The event was attended by senior government officials including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila.
Ifeanyichukwu's endorsement represents significant political support from Nigeria's southeast region for the administration's electoral reform agenda, highlighting the broad-based consideration of amendments designed to enhance the country's democratic processes.
