Nigeria Sees Massive Surge in Voter Registration
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a significant milestone in the nation's democratic process, reporting a total of 2,316,232 new voter registrations across the country. This latest data, released on Sunday, highlights a vigorous participation in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, with notable disparities in registration numbers between states.
State-by-State Breakdown: The Top Performers
According to the official figures for Week 12 of the exercise, Osun State emerged as the frontrunner with an impressive 185,089 completed registrations. It was closely followed by Imo State, which recorded 143,386 new registrants. The northern state of Kano secured the third position with 132,290 registrations, demonstrating a strong uptake in the region.
Other states with remarkable numbers include Sokoto (123,320), Lagos (109,693), the Federal Capital Territory (106,855), and Borno (106,376). The commission provided a comprehensive list showing the performance of all states, with Kogi, Jigawa, Zamfara, and Katsina all registering over 80,000 new voters each.
Anambra's Suspension and Regional Trends
In a notable exception, INEC reiterated that registration remains suspended in Anambra State. This temporary halt is in line with Section 9 (6) of the Electoral Act 2022 and will persist until after the state's governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025. Consequently, Anambra has no figures in this latest update.
The data reveals a fascinating trend: while states in the South-West, particularly Osun and Lagos, have consistently led since the CVR began on August 18, 2025, there is a noticeable surge in participation from northern states. This uptick is largely attributed to intensified mobilization efforts by community-based organizations, religious leaders, and local government officials who are actively promoting voter awareness and encouraging eligible residents to enroll.
The CVR exercise is scheduled to continue until August 2026, giving millions of eligible Nigerians further opportunity to register and participate in the nation's electoral process.
