INEC Chairman Vows Credible 2027 Elections

The Chairman of Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, has made a firm commitment to delivering transparent and credible general elections in 2027. He revealed that the commission has already begun extensive preparations to fortify the nation's democratic system.

New Year Message Focuses on Electoral Integrity

Professor Amupitan delivered this assurance in his New Year address to INEC staff members across the country. He described the coming year as a pivotal time for renewal and for strengthening the institution before the next major electoral cycle.

Reflecting on the commission's work in the past year, the INEC boss praised the dedication of his staff. He specifically highlighted the successful conduct of the Anambra State governorship election, which took place shortly after he assumed leadership of the commission.

Building on Past Success for Future Polls

According to Amupitan, the Anambra exercise proved that with a disciplined, united, and professional approach, INEC can safeguard the ballot's sanctity and increase public trust in elections. "We have shown that with discipline and unity, we can protect our democracy," he stated.

Looking ahead, the Chairman outlined immediate electoral tasks, emphasizing the need for full preparation. "As we look ahead to an exciting yet challenging year, we must fully prepare for the upcoming FCT Area Council elections, as well as the off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states," he directed.

Staff Welfare and Institutional Trust as Priorities

Professor Amupitan placed the 2027 general elections at the top of the commission's agenda, expressing confidence that collective effort would guarantee smooth and credible processes. "Our goal is to deliver a free, fair, credible, transparent and inclusive poll," he declared.

The INEC Chairman also vowed to make staff welfare a key focus, reiterating his dedication to cultivating a workplace built on equity, discipline, and mutual respect. "Your welfare remains a top priority. We will continue to foster an environment where discipline is maintained, but where every staff member feels valued, protected and equipped to excel," he assured them.

He called on all personnel to remain unwavering in upholding the electoral system's integrity. Amupitan stressed that the combined work of INEC staff is essential to building a commission trusted by Nigerians and to ensuring every eligible voter is empowered and every vote is counted.

Concluding with optimism, the Chairman expressed his belief that the year would be one of substantial progress for INEC. He extended prosperous New Year wishes to staff and their families, urging, "Together, let us uphold the integrity and transparency of our electoral system as we continue to serve the people of Nigeria with excellence and build an INEC trusted by all."
