The Chairman of Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, has declared the commission's unwavering commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible general elections in 2027. He revealed that extensive preparations to strengthen the nation's democracy have already commenced.
New Year Message and Institutional Renewal
Professor Amupitan made this pledge in his 2026 New Year address to INEC staff across the country. He described the coming year as a pivotal period for renewal and for solidifying the commission's structures ahead of the next major electoral cycle. Reflecting on 2025, the INEC chairman praised staff for their dedication, highlighting the successful conduct of the Anambra State governorship election shortly after he assumed office on October 23, 2025.
He stated that the Anambra exercise proved that with discipline, unity, and professionalism, INEC can safeguard the integrity of the ballot and enhance public trust in Nigeria's electoral system.
Roadmap to 2027: Key Elections and Preparations
Outlining the immediate tasks, Amupitan directed focus towards the upcoming FCT Area Council Elections in February 2026, as well as the off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states. He emphasized that these events are crucial stepping stones.
"Our preparations for the General Elections are paramount," Amupitan asserted. "I am confident that our collective efforts will ensure seamless and credible electoral processes. Our goal is to deliver a free, fair, credible, transparent, and inclusive poll."

The INEC Chairman also reaffirmed his inaugural promise to prioritize staff welfare, vowing to cultivate a workplace built on equity, discipline, and mutual respect.
