The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken significant steps toward ensuring a smooth electoral process in Anambra State as the governorship election approaches. Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu has convened a crucial meeting with political parties and other key stakeholders to address pressing electoral matters.
High-Level Stakeholder Engagement
During the interactive session held in Awka, Professor Yakubu emphasized INEC's commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections. The meeting brought together representatives from various political parties, civil society organizations, and security agencies to discuss election preparedness and address potential concerns.
'We are leaving no stone unturned in our preparations for the Anambra State governorship election,' Professor Yakubu declared during the engagement. 'This meeting demonstrates our commitment to inclusive stakeholder participation in the electoral process.'
Impressive PVC Collection Statistics
The electoral body revealed encouraging statistics regarding Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collection across the state. Recent data indicates that 63.9% of registered voters have successfully collected their PVCs, signaling strong voter readiness for the upcoming poll.
This substantial collection rate represents a significant improvement compared to previous elections in the region. INEC officials attribute this success to extended collection periods, additional collection centers, and enhanced public awareness campaigns.
Enhanced Security Measures
Security arrangements for the election formed a major part of discussions during the stakeholder meeting. INEC has been working closely with security agencies to develop comprehensive security plans that will ensure the safety of voters, election officials, and materials across all 21 local government areas of the state.
The commission assured participants that adequate measures are in place to protect polling units and collation centers, addressing concerns about potential electoral violence or disruptions.
Logistical Preparations Intensify
INEC has commenced the deployment of sensitive and non-sensitive materials to various locations within the state. The commission's state office has been working round the clock to ensure all necessary equipment, including Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices, are properly configured and tested before election day.
'Our technical team has been conducting final checks on all election technology to guarantee seamless voter accreditation and result transmission,' an INEC official confirmed.
Call for Peaceful Campaigns
Professor Yakubu used the opportunity to appeal to political parties and their candidates to maintain peaceful campaigns and avoid inflammatory rhetoric. He emphasized the importance of issue-based campaigning and urged parties to respect electoral guidelines throughout the process.
The INEC chairman also reminded political actors of the commission's zero-tolerance policy for electoral offenses and warned that any violations would be dealt with according to the Electoral Act.
With the high PVC collection rate and comprehensive stakeholder engagement, INEC appears well-positioned to conduct a successful election in Anambra State. However, the commission continues to encourage remaining registered voters to collect their PVCs before the deadline to ensure maximum participation in the democratic process.
