INEC Accredits Nouvelle Perspective for Ekiti 2026 Governorship Election
INEC OKs Nouvelle Perspective for Ekiti 2026 Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has accredited Nouvelle Perspective, a notable election observation group, along with 97 other organizations to monitor the upcoming governorship election in Ekiti State. The election is scheduled for June 20, 2026.

Accreditation Details

The list of accredited observers was published on INEC's website, officially clearing Nouvelle Perspective to participate in monitoring the poll. This accreditation allows the organization to deploy observers across Ekiti State to oversee compliance with electoral guidelines, voting procedures, collation processes, and the overall conduct of the election.

According to reports, Nouvelle Perspective was accredited alongside AUDA-NEPAD Nigeria as the only two foreign observer groups approved for the election. The remaining 96 organizations are domestic observers, including Yiaga Africa, CLEEN Foundation, Nigerian Bar Association, Nigerian Women Trust Fund, and Centre for Democracy and Development West Africa.

Importance of Observers

Analysts emphasize that the presence of both local and international observers is crucial for promoting transparency, strengthening public confidence in the electoral process, and ensuring the election reflects the will of the people.

Jim Chimezie Okolo, the Nigerian Coordinator of Nouvelle Perspective, stated that group members are expected to participate in sensitization workshops organized by INEC ahead of the election. He highlighted the organization's consistent contributions to strengthening democracy, electoral integrity, and civic participation across Africa and beyond through observation missions, advocacy, and policy engagement.

Previous Observations

Okolo noted that Nouvelle Perspective observed the high-profile 2024 United States presidential election that produced Donald Trump, which enhanced the organization's expertise in election monitoring and democratic governance. The group also observed Namibia's election last year, which resulted in Gideon Boko winning, as well as various off-season elections in Nigeria, including the Rivers State local government election, senatorial, House of Representatives, and State Assembly elections. Additionally, they observed the Anambra governorship election that returned Chukwuma Soludo as governor for a second term.
