A significant political movement is gaining momentum in Abia State as the 2027 general elections approach, with leaders and stakeholders from Isiala Ngwa North and South Local Government Areas amplifying their appeals for Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, to declare his candidacy for the state's governorship. This push underscores a broader and expanding trend within the influential Isiala Ngwa political bloc, where community elders, party members, and grassroots activists have publicly endorsed Kalu as their top choice for Abia's highest office.

The calls emerged during the official launch of the Ikeoha Movement and the declaration of interest by Chief Uzoma Ihuka to seek the House of Representatives seat for Isiala Ngwa Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Congress (APC). At the well-attended gathering, Kalu praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration, describing it as a stabilizing and unifying force that has bolstered the APC nationwide. He contrasted this with other political parties, which he said are struggling with internal divisions and leadership crises, while the APC remains cohesive, focused, and dedicated to delivering meaningful development to Nigerians.
Kalu emphasized that the progress observed under the APC-led Federal Government is merely a preview of greater achievements to come, particularly for Abia State. The event also saw a surge of defections from opposition parties, notably the Labour Party Nigeria, with many new members citing renewed hope, purposeful leadership, and visible progress within the APC as their reasons for switching allegiance. These defectors were formally welcomed into the APC, enhancing the party's grassroots presence and political framework in Isiala Ngwa.
Kalu's Response to Governorship Calls and Future Plans
In response to the escalating demands for him to join the Abia governorship race, Kalu acknowledged the overwhelming support from various parts of the state, including Bende and Obingwa, and expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in him. However, he noted that he would announce his official position at an appropriate time, stressing that such a significant declaration must be made at the proper constitutional venue—the Abia State capital, Umuahia.
"I have heard your calls and I am deeply honoured by the trust you have shown. But I will respond at the right time and in the right place," Kalu stated. "When we discuss governorship and the mandate to lead the people of Abia State, there is only one place recognized by the Constitution for such a declaration, and that is Umuahia. I will invite all stakeholders across the state, and it is there that I will give my response."
He assured supporters that a formal invitation would soon be issued for a major gathering in Umuahia, where he would collectively address the widespread calls regarding his potential governorship ambition. The event concluded on a positive note, marked by renewed optimism, enhanced party unity, and a clear indication of the APC's growing influence in Abia State as the 2027 elections draw nearer.
