Itsekiri Youth Group Urges Edema to Contest Delta South Senate Seat in 2027
A prominent Itsekiri youth organization, the Itsekiri Youths for Good Governance (IYGG), has publicly called for Prince Collins Oritsetimeyin Edema to enter the race for the Delta South Senatorial seat in the upcoming 2027 general election. This appeal was made in a formal statement released after a strategic leadership meeting held by the group.
Leadership and Vision Cited as Key Reasons for Support
The statement, jointly signed by Sam Oki Metsh, the Delta South Coordinator of IYGG, and George Omatsuli, the group's Secretary, emphasized that Edema possesses the necessary leadership qualities, extensive experience, and a community-driven vision essential for effective representation at the National Assembly. IYGG described him as a transformational leader with a proven track record in both private enterprise and public service.
According to the group, the Delta South Senatorial District, which includes the Itsekiri, Ijaw, and Isoko ethnic nationalities, requires a representative who demonstrates integrity, political maturity, and the competence to attract development and advocate powerfully for the region. The call is rooted in Edema's longstanding commitment to service, philanthropy, and inclusive leadership.
Emphasis on Unity and Past Achievements
In their statement, IYGG highlighted the importance of unity, asserting that the next senator must be capable of building bridges across ethnic and political divides. The group pointed to Edema's previous roles as evidence of his dedication to youth development and grassroots engagement. These include his tenure as President of the National Association of Itsekiri Students (NAIS) and later as a two-time President of the National Association of Itsekiri Graduates (NAIG).
Additionally, IYGG referenced Edema's role as the Sole Representative of the Olu of Warri to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), noting that this position underscores his experience in managing community relations within the critical oil and gas sector. The group stated, We have closely watched your trajectory and believe you have the capacity to lead our people effectively. Your vision for inclusivity is what Delta South needs in 2027.
Competitive Political Landscape in Delta South
The Delta South Senatorial seat is widely regarded as one of the most competitive political positions in Delta State, consistently attracting interest from major political stakeholders. This endorsement from IYGG adds a significant youth-driven dimension to the pre-election dynamics, potentially influencing voter sentiment and candidate strategies as the 2027 election approaches.
