Kano Governor Approves N1.5bn for Mass Wedding

The administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has authorized the release of N1.5 billion for the planned mass wedding programme in Kano State. This initiative is set to benefit no fewer than 3,000 intending couples across the state.

Details of the Mass Wedding Programme

The Kano State Hisbah Board, under the leadership of Commander-General Sheikh Ibrahim Daurawa, has finalized arrangements to conduct medical screenings for prospective couples. The screenings will cover HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, genotype compatibility, drug use, and other health conditions. Only applicants who pass these tests will qualify for the state-sponsored mass wedding.

Sheikh Daurawa disclosed that the N1.5 billion budget will cover the purchase of furniture, food items, dowry, and clothing materials for the couples. Additionally, each bride will receive N100,000 as startup capital to support their new households.

Speaking on Monday, June 15, 2026, Daurawa stated: “The Kano State Government is to spend N1.5 billion on the entire mass wedding programme, which will soon be conducted in the state.” He expressed gratitude to Governor Yusuf for initiating the programme and noted that the governor is expected to announce the official date for the event.

Selection Process and Medical Screening

According to Daurawa, 3,000 couples will be selected from the 5,000 applicants after the medical screening exercise. The Hisbah Board, in collaboration with the State Ministry of Health, has already commenced the screening process. The mandatory tests include checks for hepatitis, pregnancy, HIV, genotype, and other sexually transmitted diseases.

The Hisbah Board has also emphasized that couples participating in the mass wedding must seek approval before considering divorce, promoting commitment and stability in marriages.

Background and Community Response

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s initiative aims to support couples in need by providing financial assistance and essential items. Previously, the government had announced a mass wedding for 2,000 couples, but the number has now increased to 3,000. Some married men have also appealed to be included in the scheme, arguing that it would alleviate the high costs of polygamous marriages and help regularize relationships to prevent immorality.

The Hisbah Board is proceeding with the government-directed plan, which includes comprehensive medical screening to promote morality and reduce social vices in the state.
