Dr Obafemi Hamzat, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for Lagos State in the 2027 election, has firmly denied reports that he entered into an agreement to serve only one term if elected. The current deputy governor made this clarification during an interview, putting to rest speculation that his candidacy was tied to a political understanding limiting his tenure to four years.
When asked directly whether such an agreement existed, Hamzat replied: "Agreement? No, there's no agreement." His response, reported by Vanguard, directly counters rumors that have circulated since his emergence as the APC flagbearer.
Manifesto Prioritizes Quality of Life
Hamzat emphasized that his focus is on presenting a clear development agenda rather than engaging in political speculation. The manifesto, initially over 500 pages, was streamlined after extensive consultations with market women, transport operators, academics, and professionals. It prioritizes practical solutions to improve quality of life for Lagos residents, including expanding access to running water, strengthening security, improving infrastructure, and decentralizing governance.
The candidate pledged to build on the achievements of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration, stating that government is a continuum and ongoing projects would be sustained. He stressed discipline and adherence to the rule of law as essential for the state's development, calling on Lagosians to embrace orderliness for the city to function effectively.
Running Mate Selection and Deputy Roles
Hamzat explained that the choice of Damilola Sonayon-James as his running mate was guided by considerations of religious balance, gender inclusion, youth representation, and regional diversity. He rejected the notion that deputy governors are "spare tyres," noting that he has supervised key ministries during the Sanwo-Olu administration and will accord his deputy significant responsibilities if elected, as reported by Punch.
He also ruled out a post-election rift with Governor Sanwo-Olu, describing him as a long-time friend and political ally.

Hamzat expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will secure re-election in 2027, arguing that the president is laying a foundation for long-term national development despite challenges from ongoing reforms.
