Dr Martha Agba, a former House of Representatives aspirant and National Coordinator of the RenewHERs 'Saving Our Mothers' Initiative, has urged eligible residents across Cross River State to actively participate in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Call for Democratic Participation
In a statement issued on Monday, Agba described voter registration as a fundamental aspect of democratic participation and inclusive governance. She urged citizens, particularly young people, to take advantage of the exercise to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). She emphasized that active participation in the electoral process is essential for ensuring accountability and meaningful development across communities.
Rights and Responsibilities
According to her, citizens aged 18 years and above have both the constitutional right and civic responsibility to participate in elections and contribute to shaping the future of the country. She added that the PVC remains a powerful tool for citizens to make their voices heard during elections. She encouraged eligible residents to complete fresh registration where necessary, transfer their voter details if they have relocated, and replace lost or damaged PVCs before the registration window closes.
Strengthening Democratic Institutions
She noted that increased voter participation would strengthen democratic institutions and improve representation at all levels of government. The development advocate also urged youths across Cross River State to reject political apathy and become more actively involved in governance through electoral participation. According to her, young people have a critical role to play in determining the future leadership and development trajectory of the state.
Grassroots Sensitization
Agba further appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to intensify grassroots sensitisation campaigns aimed at increasing awareness and participation in the exercise. The ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise by INEC covers fresh registration for new voters, replacement of lost or damaged PVCs, and transfer of voter registration for citizens who have changed locations.
