Diaspora Group and Pillars of Equity Announce Mega Rally for Otu and Ekpenyong Ahead of 2027 Elections
In a significant move to galvanize political support, the Nigeria Diaspora Business Network (USA) and the Pillars of Equity have jointly announced a "Mega Rally" set for April 4, 2026. The event aims to mobilize backing for Cross River State Governor, Prince Bassey Otu, and Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, who represents the Southern Senatorial District, as the 2027 election cycle approaches.
Press Briefing Details and Media Partnership Call
At a press briefing held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Center in Calabar on Monday, Mr. Kenneth Etim, Director of Finance for Pillars of Equity, called for media partnerships to broadcast the group's message of "reward for more work." He emphasized that the rally is designed to highlight the positive impacts of the current administration and encourage continued efforts.
Etim stated, "We are coming to seek your partnership, to report this amazing information to people out there that this event is going to take place by 10 o'clock in the morning on Saturday, 4th of April, 2026, at Atu Primary School." The group, active since late 2022, credits its grassroots mobilization for the administration's successes in Cross River State.
Governor Otu's Achievements Highlighted
During the briefing, Etim lauded Governor Otu's accomplishments across multiple sectors, including:
- Economic reforms that have spurred growth and development.
- The establishment of the University of Education and Entrepreneurship, enhancing educational opportunities.
- Revitalization of the state's security apparatus, leading to improved safety and reduced concerns for residents.
Etim noted, "The security apparatus has been rejigged because results are at least, you and I can sleep and have less concern." He also highlighted the administration's priority to restore tourism landmarks like Tinapa and the Obudu Ranch Resort, boosting the state's economy.
Philosophy and Human Capital Commitment
Mr. Effiom Bassey, Secretary General of Pillars of Equity, explained the group's philosophy, stating they stand for "justice, fairness, and the truth," which in 2023 meant returning power to the Southern Senatorial District. He said, "Turn by turn is equity. That's why we are called Pillars of Equity."
Bassey further praised Governor Otu's commitment to human capital, particularly the release of N10 billion to clear a decade-long backlog of gratuities for retirees from 2009 to 2016. He added, "His Excellency saw the plight of our mothers and our grandmothers and decided to release 10 billion naira to clear up gratuities. That's a kudos to him. It's what others could not do."
Senator Ekpenyong's Contributions and Federal Support
The group also commended Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, describing him as the "Star Boy" of the Senate. They cited his key roles in:
- Driving the South South Development Commission bill to foster regional growth.
- Implementing scholarship interventions to support education.
- Personally supervising the Calabar-Itu road construction, which has significantly reduced travel time to Uyo.
Additionally, the group acknowledged the facilitation provided by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that federal policies such as the Student Loan Fund and exchange rate harmonization are beginning to "trickle down" to the state level, benefiting Cross River residents.
Rally Purpose and Future Outlook
The upcoming mega rally at Atu Primary School is expected to serve as a platform to encourage Governor Otu and Senator Ekpenyong to "do more" and to officially commence the journey toward the 2027 general elections. The event aims to rally public support and showcase the administration's achievements, setting the stage for future political campaigns.
