The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected a list of candidates circulating on social media, describing it as fake and not an official record of the party's candidates for the upcoming elections in Imo, Abia, Anambra, and other affected states. The party urged members and the public to disregard the document, which it said did not originate from its national headquarters.
NDC Speaks Out on Viral Candidate List
In a statement issued on Friday, June 19, the NDC National Secretary, Barrister Ikenna Enekweizu, called on party members and the general public to ignore the widely circulated list. He emphasized that the document was not authorized by the party. The statement read: "The general public, especially members of the NDC in Imo, Abia, Anambra, and other affected states, are hereby urged to disregard the lists of candidates widely circulating on social media as the authentic lists of our party's candidates from the aforementioned states. The said lists are fake and did not emanate from the party headquarters."
Party Confirms Official Candidates Submitted to INEC
The NDC clarified that it had already submitted the names of its genuine candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) through the proper process as stipulated by the Electoral Act. The party stated that the names being shared online should not be considered as its final candidate list. According to the NDC, the circulating documents were being promoted by individuals aiming to create confusion within the party and undermine public confidence in its internal affairs.
Investigation Launched into Source of Fake Document
The party also revealed that it has initiated an investigation into how the alleged fake list was created and distributed. Enekweizu stated: "Such lists in circulation are being peddled by mischief makers and those who do not wish the party well. However, the party is investigating the sources of such fabrications and leaks, as they are desperate attempts to sow ill will and create distractions within the party." The NDC reiterated its commitment to building a strong political platform and urged members to only rely on information released through official party channels.
Anambra Youths Reject NDC Primary Results
In a related development, youths in Nnewi Federal Constituency rejected the NDC primary election results circulating online, claiming the figures did not reflect the actual outcome of the exercise. The group questioned the reported victory of Peter Uzokwe and alleged inconsistencies in the vote figures. They demanded that the party release results that truly represent the people's choice. The youths warned Peter Obi and the NDC against imposing candidates, stating they would resist any decision that ignores their preferred aspirant.
NDC Aspirant Takes Party and INEC to Court
In another legal challenge, Imo North senatorial aspirant Isaac Nwachukwu dragged the NDC and INEC to court, seeking recognition as the party's candidate for the 2027 election. Nwachukwu alleged that his name was replaced after he paid N25 million for party processes and emerged as the consensus candidate among other aspirants. The suit, filed before the Federal High Court in Owerri, seeks to stop the NDC from presenting another candidate. The party is yet to issue an official response to the legal action.
