NYCN Declares Support for INEC, Cautions Political Parties Against Distractions
The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), representing various youth organizations, has publicly declared its support for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In a strong statement, the council warned political parties against distracting the electoral body as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify. The youth leaders emphasized the need for politicians to respect judicial pronouncements and allow INEC to focus on its critical electoral duties without interference.
Solidarity Rally in Abuja Reinforces Youth Backing
During a solidarity visit to INEC headquarters in Abuja, NYCN President Babangida Onimisi Isah, alongside other youth leaders, addressed a rally to express unwavering support. Isah clarified that the visit was not motivated by personal or political interests but represented the collective voice of Nigerian youths. He stressed that the electoral body must not be dragged into partisan matters, highlighting its independence and mandate to conduct free and fair elections.
Isah commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his developmental strides and efforts to promote youth inclusion in governance. He noted that the president's leadership style of involving youths and initiating key welfare programs has been positively received. Additionally, the group praised the Kogi state government for aligning with the federal government's leadership approach.
Confidence in INEC Leadership and Rule of Law
The youth leader expressed confidence in the appointment of INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu, stating that the commission's leadership has demonstrated a strong commitment to upholding the rule of law in a short period. Isah emphasized that no political party is bigger than INEC or the country itself, underscoring that Nigeria's unity must take precedence over partisan interests.
He urged political parties to refrain from bringing their internal crises before INEC, describing the commission as an independent institution that must function without external interference. Instead, aggrieved parties were advised to seek redress through the courts where necessary, rather than attempting to involve the electoral body in matters outside its official mandate.
Commitment to Peace and National Unity
Reaffirming their dedication to peace and national unity, the NYCN groups highlighted that Nigeria remains the only country they have and must be protected at all costs. They urged INEC to remain steadfast in its decisions and continue its preparations for the 2027 elections with integrity and focus.
The council's stance serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining electoral integrity and avoiding distractions that could undermine the democratic process. As the 2027 elections approach, this youth-led initiative aims to foster a conducive environment for credible and transparent elections, free from political manipulations.
