Election Observers Demand Safety Measures Ahead of Nigeria's 2027 Polls

As Nigeria prepares for its 2027 general elections, a coalition of independent election observers has expressed significant concerns regarding the safety of its members. The group is calling on authorities to provide adequate protection and ensure a credible electoral process across the nation.

Appeal for Protection and Credibility

The appeal was made on Monday by Chief Dr. Lazarus Nwachukwu, who leads a national delegation of observers. This delegation represents prominent organizations, including the Centre for the Promotion of Peace and Unity, the National Council of NGOs and Civil Society Organizations of Nigeria, and the Forum of Independent Election Observers of Nigeria.

In a statement signed by Alhaji Bashiru Mohammed on behalf of the delegation, Nwachukwu urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the country's security agencies to guarantee that the elections are conducted without intimidation, harassment, or misuse of state institutions.

Observers Must Operate Freely

"Observers must be allowed to operate freely before, during, and after the elections," Nwachukwu emphasized. He highlighted that their work is crucial for strengthening democracy and boosting public confidence in the electoral process. "We will not allow anyone, regardless of status, to intimidate or undermine the work of this delegation."

Expertise and Procedures of the Delegation

Nwachukwu pointed out that the delegation comprises experienced professionals and administrators with decades of expertise in election observation. Their established procedures include:

  • Formally notifying electoral and security authorities of their activities.
  • Conducting courtesy visits to relevant institutions.
  • Holding press briefings throughout the electoral process.

Additionally, the delegation will independently monitor election activities and provide detailed reports to electoral bodies and other stakeholders. This initiative aims to enhance Nigeria's democratic system by promoting transparency and accountability.

Future Plans and Mobilization Efforts

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, the group plans to mobilize up to 5,000 independent observers. Their operations will align with international best practices to ensure a fair and credible electoral environment.

Nwachukwu also called on all Nigerians to cooperate with observer teams, emphasizing that such collaboration is essential for fostering transparency and accountability during the polls. This collective effort is seen as vital for upholding democratic values and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.
