Anambra Governorship Election Receives Widespread Acclaim
International election observers and civil society organizations have overwhelmingly praised the Independent National Electoral Commission for its exceptional management of the Anambra State Governorship Election held on Saturday. The electoral process was widely described as transparent, orderly, and peaceful throughout the state.
The positive assessment was officially communicated through Mr. Dayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN. According to reports from the INEC Situation Room, polling units across Anambra maintained a calm atmosphere with significantly improved voter participation compared to the 2021 elections.
Efficient Logistics and Security Coordination
Ambassador Dr. Emmanuel Nkweke of the International Association of World Peace Advocates, speaking from Awka, confirmed that voting materials, BVAS deployment, and security arrangements were exceptionally well coordinated. He specifically noted the professional conduct of security personnel and the absence of vote-buying incidents in the areas he monitored.
Civil society organizations echoed these positive observations. Ms. Cynthia Mbamalu, Director of Programmes at Yiaga Africa, highlighted the early arrival of election materials and officials, with voting commencing promptly at 8:30 a.m. as required by the Electoral Act.
Record-Breaking PVC Collection Achievement
The smooth electoral process was largely attributed to INEC's extensive pre-election preparations, particularly the remarkable success in Permanent Voter Card collection. Out of 2,802,790 registered voters, an impressive 2,769,137 citizens collected their PVCs, achieving a 98.8% collection rate.
Several locations demonstrated perfect collection records, including:
- Ugbene in Awka North
- Alor I and Bridge Head II
- Ogbunike I & II
- Umunya I & II
Even in challenging rural terrains such as Ayamelum and Anambra West, collection rates exceeded 99%, demonstrating INEC's commitment to inclusive voter participation under Professor Amupitan's leadership.
Political Leaders and Security Assessment
Hon. Dominic Okafor, representing Aguata Federal Constituency, commended the electoral process after casting his vote at Polling Unit 004 in Umuechefu Hall, Igboukwu. He praised the timely arrival of INEC officials and proper functioning of BVAS machines.
Security assessments remained positive throughout the election. Jake Epelle, Founder of TAF Africa, described Anambra residents as peace-loving and noted the calm security situation across the state.
Professor Amupitan reaffirmed INEC's dedication to credible elections, stating: "Our duty is to the Nigerian people. INEC is committed to ensuring that every valid vote counts and that the process remains credible, transparent, and peaceful."
