Ogun 2027: APC Aspirant Denies Rumours of Party's Preferred Governorship Candidate
In a recent development ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State, Abayomi Hunye, a prominent aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), has firmly dismissed circulating rumours that party leaders have already selected a preferred candidate. Hunye, who currently serves as the Managing Director of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), addressed the issue during a press interaction in Abeokuta, describing the claims as baseless and lacking legitimacy without official consensus from the party's leadership.
Clarifying the Rumours and Party Process
Hunye emphasised that any consensus candidate must emerge through a collective decision-making process involving party executives and leaders, who should evaluate various factors among aspirants before making a choice. He stated that it is unacceptable for individuals to speak to the press about the party's candidate without proper authorization, as this could mislead the public. In his words, "I want to use this opportunity to clear the air that nobody has been picked from anywhere, and if there is anybody claiming such, I think it is a rumour, and I want to stand by that as a rumour." He further urged that the party consider all necessary means rather than allowing unfounded announcements to spread misinformation.
Appeal for Regional Fairness in Ogun State
Beyond addressing the rumours, Hunye, a former Commissioner for Community Development and Cooperatives, made a heartfelt appeal for regional equity in the state's political landscape. He highlighted that Ogun West Senatorial District has been marginalised since the state's creation in 1976, despite its significant economic contributions. While acknowledging that all three senatorial districts—Ogun West, Ogun Central, and Ogun East—have the right to produce the governor, he called on the other two districts to allow Ogun West to take the lead in the upcoming election for the sake of fairness.
Hunye pointed out that the economic hub of the state, including areas like Agbara, is located in Ogun West, and the region has consistently supported state revenue. He expressed regret that, despite this, Ogun West has yet to see a governor from its ranks. "For the past 50 years, it has always been between the Central and the East. Are you saying Ogun West is not part of the state? Legitimately, we all have a right to it, but to be fair to other groups, they should consider Ogun West," he added, stressing the need for inclusive representation.
Looking Ahead to the 2027 Election
As the political climate heats up, Hunye's statements underscore the importance of transparent processes within the APC and broader calls for regional balance in Ogun State. With the 2027 election on the horizon, his appeal resonates with ongoing discussions about equity and representation in Nigerian politics. The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected as party mechanisms and public opinion continue to shape the race for the governorship seat.
