Osun Residents Stage Protest, Task New REC on Electoral Neutrality

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming governorship polls in Osun State, a coalition of residents took to the streets yesterday to voice their demands for electoral integrity. The peaceful protest unfolded at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osogbo, where demonstrators directly addressed the newly redeployed Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Oluwatoyin Babalola.

Growing Concerns Over Alleged Bias

The protest was primarily motivated by mounting speculation and allegations that Babalola's transfer to Osun State was orchestrated to influence the outcome of the gubernatorial election. Participants, including market women, traders, youths, students, and members of the Coalition of Concerned Citizens in Osun State, expressed deep apprehension about the recent postings and redeployments within INEC. They characterized these moves as a deliberate attempt to undermine the credibility and transparency of the electoral process.

Akinkumi Abdulsalam, Chairman of the Coalition of Concerned Citizens in Osun State, emphasized the urgency of the protest, stating it was necessary to engage the new REC and advocate for a free, fair, and credible electoral exercise. He implored Babalola to prioritize transparency and ensure that every vote counts without interference.

INEC's Response to the Protest

In response to the demonstrators, REC Oluwatoyin Babalola, represented by INEC's Head of Legal Department, Niyi Fayanju, and Head of Voters' Education and Publicity, Rufus Ariyo, addressed the crowd at the Commission's office in Osogbo. The officials assured the protesters that their concerns were being taken seriously and reiterated INEC's commitment to conducting a credible election. They pledged that all votes would be accurately counted and that the commission would uphold its mandate of neutrality.

Governor Adeleke's Campaign Preparations

Meanwhile, Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, is advancing his re-election bid with the formal unveiling of a 52-member campaign team. According to a post on the state's official X account yesterday, this structure, known as the Imole Campaign Council 2026, is designed to serve as the central coordinating body for the governor's political strategy, mobilization efforts, and electioneering activities across the state.

Details from the government indicate that the Council will be inaugurated today, April 22, 2026, marking the official commencement of high-level campaign activities for the upcoming election season. This move underscores the intensifying political atmosphere in Osun State as stakeholders prepare for a contentious electoral battle.

The protest highlights the critical importance of public trust in electoral institutions and the ongoing vigilance of citizens in safeguarding democratic processes. As the election date approaches, all eyes will be on INEC and its officials to demonstrate impartiality and ensure a level playing field for all candidates.
