PDP NEC Reaffirms Zoning Formula and Urges Unity Ahead of National Convention
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly reaffirmed its zoning formula for national elective positions, while calling for unity among members as the party intensifies preparations for its forthcoming national convention. At its 107th meeting held in Abuja on Monday night, the party's highest decision-making organ between conventions deliberated on key issues affecting its organisational strength and future electoral engagements, expressing confidence in the PDP's readiness to reposition itself as a credible alternative for governance.
Ratification of Congresses and Membership Mobilisation
In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and signed by the Chairman of the National Caretaker Working Committee, Abdulrahman Mohammed, and the Secretary, Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu, NEC ratified the reports of the recently concluded ward, local government, state, and zonal congresses nationwide. The committee commended party leaders, electoral panels, stakeholders, and members for their commitment to due process, noting that the exercises were largely peaceful, transparent, and credible.
On membership mobilisation, NEC reviewed the ongoing electronic registration of members and lauded the progress recorded so far. It reaffirmed its commitment to building a comprehensive and technology-driven database, urging members across the federation to actively participate in the exercise.
Endorsement of Zoning Arrangement and Convention Preparations
A major highlight of the meeting was the endorsement of the party's zoning arrangement for national elective offices. NEC stated that the formula, anchored on equity, fairness, inclusiveness, and national balance, would serve as the guiding framework for the national convention scheduled for March 29 and 30, 2026. The committee also noted that the sale of nomination forms had commenced and advised all aspirants to adhere strictly to approved guidelines and timelines.
Reiterating its readiness for the convention, NEC directed all relevant organs and committees to ensure seamless coordination for what it described as a credible and transparent exercise, themed: "A Convention of Inclusiveness, Unity, and Renewal." It further stressed the supremacy of the party and urged members to remain disciplined and committed to its collective interest.

In his opening remarks, Mohammed described the NEC meeting as coming at a defining moment in the life of the party, following the successful conduct of congresses across the country. He urged members to remain magnanimous in victory and united in contest. "There is no victor and no vanquished. What we have is a shared responsibility to rebuild and reposition our party," he said, calling on stakeholders to place party interest above personal ambition as the convention approaches. He also commended the National Convention Planning Committee, led by former Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, for its diligence and coordination in organising the exercise.
Also speaking, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a leading figure in the party, Nyesom Wike, emphasised the need for genuine reconciliation and unwavering commitment among members. Wike warned against opportunistic politics, urging party faithful to demonstrate loyalty beyond the quest for elective positions. "We must continue to build unity. You cannot force commitment, but those who truly believe in this party must stand firm. Politics should not be about deception or convenience," he said. He further stressed that electoral success was not solely dependent on financial strength but on grassroots connection and confidence, encouraging aspirants not to be deterred by perceived disadvantages.
In his remarks, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mao Ohuabunwa, described the moment as critical to the party's future, urging members to approach issues with wisdom, restraint, and a spirit of compromise. He commended the successful conduct of congresses and the ongoing e-registration exercise, noting that a credible membership register remained the foundation of a strong political organisation. On zoning, Ohuabunwa appealed to members to embrace the recommendations of the zoning committee with an open mind, guided by equity and the overriding interest of party unity. "The strength of the PDP lies not in uniformity of opinion but in our ability to manage differences and emerge stronger," he said.
