Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, has reiterated his claim that he was the rightful winner of the 2023 presidential election. During an interview on Channels Television's 'Politics Today' programme on Sunday night, July 27, Obi stated unequivocally that the officially declared result did not reflect the true outcome.
When asked directly whether he believed he had won the 2023 contest, Obi answered: 'I did.' Pressed further on whether he felt the figures were manipulated against him, he replied simply: 'Yes.'
Background to the 2023 Election
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared the winner of the February 2023 election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Obi, then running on the Labour Party platform, polled over six million votes, finishing third behind Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Since the election, Obi has consistently disputed the results, alleging irregularities and lack of transparency.
Obi's Political Journey Since 2023
Obi has remained a prominent opposition voice. He resigned from the Labour Party on May 2, 2026, and was ratified as the NDC's presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections on May 29, 2026. His departure from the Labour Party and subsequent adoption by the NDC have positioned him as a key challenger to the ruling APC.
During the interview, Obi appealed to Nigerian authorities to ensure that the 2027 general elections are free, fair, and credible. He stated that Nigeria deserves leadership chosen by the electorate without interference, emphasising the need for competence and compassion in governance.

Earlier reports by Legit.ng noted that Obi had firmly denied claims that he harbours any agenda to break up Nigeria. These accusations were levelled by Ali Modu Sheriff, a former governor of Borno state, after Obi called on President Tinubu to resign or step aside due to the country's worsening security situation.
Obi rejected the characterisation entirely, pointing to his personal visits to some of the most conflict-affected communities in northern Nigeria as evidence of his commitment to the welfare of all Nigerians, regardless of region. He reiterated that his focus remains on unity and development.
