2027 Election: Tech Entrepreneur Essien Bets N1m on Peter Obi Victory
Tech Entrepreneur Essien Bets N1m on Peter Obi Victory

A prominent Nigerian software developer has predicted that Peter Gregory Obi will emerge victorious in the 2027 presidential election. Mark Essien, the founder and CEO of Hotels.ng, expressed his willingness to stake N1 million on Obi's success in the upcoming general election.

Essien's Bold Prediction

Essien made his prediction on Monday, June 15, via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, stating: "I'm willing to bet N1m with anyone that Peter Obi will be the next president." Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, was recently unveiled as the presidential flagbearer of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in May, shortly after leaving an alliance aimed at consolidating the opposition against President Bola Tinubu.

In the 2023 elections, Obi ran under the Labour Party (LP) and finished third with 6,101,533 votes. Essien's prediction suggests that Obi will surpass his previous performance and defeat both President Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Oshiomhole's Counter Argument

However, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North, has strongly criticized Obi. In an interview on The Mic on Podcast, Oshiomhole argued that Tinubu will easily overcome his opponents in the 2027 elections. The former Edo State governor questioned Obi's ability to handle security challenges, citing his tenure as Anambra governor.

Oshiomhole stated: "Peter Obi could not fix security in Anambra state. It took the intervention of Governor Willie Obiano, who took over from him to begin to destroy the property of those who he believed are involved in kidnapping. Governor Obi as he was then. I was a governor at the time; my state was safer than Anambra."

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain added: "If Obi couldn't fix Anambra state, he couldn't fix the Bakassi Boys, and Bakassi Boys got out of control, and it took the intervention of Obiano to now intervene, you think that is the guy who has the courage?"

Fayose's Perspective

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has also weighed in on the 2027 election. Fayose predicted that the division between Atiku and Obi, who are contesting on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and NDC platforms respectively, will benefit President Tinubu's re-election bid. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain argued that the opposition has weakened its chances by failing to unite under a single political party.

As the 2027 election approaches, political analysts and stakeholders continue to debate the potential outcomes, with Essien's bet adding a unique twist to the discourse.
