UK Observers in Ekiti 2026: Free Polls Key to Nigeria Partnership

The British government deployed a delegation to Ekiti State on Saturday, June 20, 2026, to observe the gubernatorial elections. The UK officials emphasized that free, fair, and peaceful elections are crucial for Nigeria's democratic development and the enduring partnership between the two nations.

In a statement issued via the UK in Nigeria X handle @UKinNigeria, the delegation noted: "We are in Ekiti State today to observe the gubernatorial elections. As neutral, nonpartisan observers, we're proud to support Nigeria's democratic process. Free, fair and peaceful elections matter — for Nigeria and for our enduring partnership."

UK Observers Highlight Importance of Democratic Integrity

The foreign election observers stressed that the conduct of credible elections is fundamental to the UK-Nigeria relationship. Their presence in Ekiti State underscores the international community's interest in the stability and democratic health of Africa's most populous nation.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji, the incumbent candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), secured a landslide victory in his polling unit. At PU 03, Ward 06, Oyebanji polled 326 votes, while other political parties—including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Democratic Party (ADP), and African Action Congress (AAC)—combined for only 4 votes.

Incumbent Leads in Polling Units

In contrast, the ADC governorship candidate, Ambassador Dare Bejide, failed to win his own polling unit and ward. Oyebanji defeated Bejide in the ADC candidate's home area, further consolidating the incumbent's lead.

The election featured 14 candidates vying for the governorship seat. Oyebanji is seeking a second term in office, and early results from polling units indicate strong support for the APC candidate.

The UK delegation's observations come as part of ongoing international support for Nigeria's electoral processes. The British government has consistently advocated for transparent and peaceful elections as a cornerstone of democratic governance.

International Support for Nigeria's Democracy

The UK's involvement in the Ekiti election reflects a broader commitment to strengthening democratic institutions in Nigeria. By sending neutral observers, the UK aims to help ensure that the electoral process is credible and reflects the will of the people.

As results continue to trickle in from polling units across the state, the focus remains on the integrity of the process. The UK government has reiterated that a free and fair election is not only vital for Nigeria but also for the enduring partnership between the two countries.
