A brief drama unfolded at Polling Unit 10, Ward B, Iyin-Ekiti, during the Ekiti 2026 governorship election after voters confronted and chased away operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The incident, captured in a viral video, occurred while voting was ongoing, as EFCC officials arrived to monitor possible vote buying.
Confrontation Disrupts Voting Briefly
The arrival of the anti-graft agency’s operatives sparked immediate reactions among voters, who questioned their presence and demanded they leave. Some residents challenged the officials, insisting there was no evidence of electoral malpractice. The confrontation created tension at the polling unit, but after the EFCC team departed, the situation calmed down and voting resumed without further disruption.
Election Activities Continue Peacefully
Despite the earlier tensions, the electoral process proceeded smoothly as voters continued to participate in the Ekiti governorship election. The EFCC had deployed operatives across the state to prevent financial inducement and other electoral misconduct, but their presence at this unit was not welcomed by voters.
According to a Reuters-certified journalist and Politics and Current Affairs Editor at Legit.ng, Ezra Ukanwa, the incident briefly disrupted voting but did not affect the overall peace of the election. Ukanwa noted that voters remained determined to exercise their franchise without interference.
