Wike Criticizes INEC's Handling of ADC Leadership Crisis, Backs Nafiu Bala
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has publicly criticized the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the ongoing leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC). During a media briefing in Abuja on Friday, Wike insisted that INEC should have recognized Nafiu Bala Gombe as the national chairman of the party, aligning with court positions on the matter.
Wike's Stance on INEC's Neutrality
Wike, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), argued that while INEC's decision to withhold recognition from any faction might appear neutral, it should have acted in accordance with judicial rulings. "In my own opinion, INEC, by that judgment, ought to have recognized Bala Gombe as the ADC national chairman," Wike stated. He emphasized that the electoral body's failure to do so undermines the legal framework guiding political party disputes.
However, Wike also noted that the ADC should consider itself fortunate that INEC has chosen not to recognize any contending factions until the court resolves the issue. "ADC should be happy that INEC said, 'Look, we are not going to recognize any of you until you sort your matter in court,'" he added, suggesting this approach prevents further escalation of the crisis.
Political Caution and Party Stability
Using the opportunity to reiterate his political stance, Wike declared that if he ever decides to leave the PDP, he would exercise caution in aligning with parties experiencing internal instability. "If I am to join another party, I will be very careful not to join a political party that has internal crisis ab initio," he said. Wike highlighted that such parties often lack strong institutional foundations compared to the PDP, which he views as more stable and established.
Background of the ADC Leadership Crisis
The comments come amid a deepening leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress, which has led to multiple claims to its national leadership. Recent developments include:
- INEC removed the names of former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola from its portal as National Chairman and National Secretary of the ADC, respectively.
- The electoral commission stated it would not recognize Nafiu Bala Gombe, who is seeking to be declared national chairman through the courts.
- INEC announced the suspension of recognition for all factions within the party and said it would not monitor any conventions or congresses organized by rival groups pending the final determination of a substantive suit before the Federal High Court.
In response, the ADC has accused INEC of acting in violation of the law and taking sides in its internal leadership dispute, further complicating the resolution process.
Implications for Nigerian Politics
This situation underscores broader challenges in Nigeria's political landscape, where internal party crises can affect electoral integrity and public trust. Wike's remarks highlight the importance of judicial and electoral bodies in mediating such disputes impartially. As the ADC crisis continues, stakeholders are watching closely to see how INEC's actions and court decisions will shape the party's future and influence political dynamics ahead of upcoming elections.
