Adelabu to Step Down as Power Minister Ahead of Oyo Governorship Bid
Nigeria's Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is poised to resign from his cabinet position in the coming days as he shifts focus to his governorship ambition in Oyo State. This move follows a recent high-level meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where Adelabu provided a comprehensive briefing on his performance and initiatives in the power sector over the past two and a half years.
Key Policy Frameworks Presented to President Tinubu
According to a statement released by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, Minister Adelabu utilized the meeting to present critical policy frameworks designed to shape the future of Nigeria's electricity sector. These include the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and its Strategic Implementation Plan, alongside the Medium- to Long-Term Integrated Resource Plan. These documents are intended to guide strategic reforms and enhance efficiency across the sector, addressing long-standing challenges in power generation and distribution.
Adelabu's Achievements and Sector Challenges
During the briefing, Adelabu highlighted significant strides made under his leadership, including efforts to stabilize power generation, improve transmission capacity, and drive comprehensive reforms aimed at boosting sector-wide efficiency. He emphasized the importance of these initiatives in laying a solid foundation for the transformation of Nigeria's electricity infrastructure. However, the statement also acknowledged ongoing challenges, such as reduced power generation linked to gas supply issues, pipeline maintenance delays, and financial obligations to gas suppliers, which continue to impact sector performance.
Timing of Resignation and Presidential Support
The planned resignation is being carefully timed to ensure continuity in the ongoing reforms, particularly as the sector navigates these complex challenges. President Tinubu has reportedly given his approval and full support for Adelabu's governorship ambition, commending the minister for his dedication and the policy groundwork established during his tenure. In response, Adelabu expressed his appreciation for the president's backing and reiterated his commitment to national development, even as he prepares to exit his ministerial role to focus on state-level leadership in Oyo.
