The Federal Government has announced plans to roll out three major digital infrastructure projects within the next few weeks, according to the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani. The projects aim to expand internet access, enhance digital services, and support the country's digital economy goals.
Projects to Boost Connectivity and Digital Economy
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Tijani revealed that the projects include the deployment of a national broadband backbone, the establishment of digital innovation parks, and the rollout of a government service portal. These initiatives are part of the administration's broader strategy to leverage technology for economic growth and social development.
The broadband backbone project is expected to provide high-speed internet connectivity to underserved and unserved areas, particularly in rural regions. According to the minister, this will help bridge the digital divide and enable more Nigerians to participate in the digital economy. The project will also support the government's target of achieving 70% broadband penetration by 2025.
Digital Innovation Parks and Government Service Portal
The digital innovation parks will be established in selected states to nurture tech startups and promote innovation. These parks will provide incubation spaces, mentorship, and access to funding for young entrepreneurs. Tijani noted that the parks would create job opportunities and position Nigeria as a hub for technology innovation in Africa.
In addition, the government service portal will be a one-stop online platform for accessing government services, including business registration, tax payments, and permit applications. This move is expected to improve efficiency, reduce corruption, and enhance the ease of doing business in the country.
